Back in 1959, Layton Ayers, founder of The Guide, was searching for a way to advertise upcoming attractions for his chain of movie theatres. He decided to print flyers and have local grocery stores insert them into patrons’ bags as well as distributing them to various businesses around town. This idea was working so well that he asked the local Woolworth store manager if he had any stock that he wanted to sell quickly. It was spring and the manager said he did not want to store left over winter coats. Layton advertised the coats on the back page of his playbill. One week later, the store manager called to say he wished he had more coats because they had sold out immediately! 

Layton knew he could sell ads in this unique digest sized publication. Family members along with a limited number of employees, helped with the production process. The Sussex Guide was created. 

Every Wednesday, traffic backs up in The Guide parking lot as motorists grab the latest issue. A fleet of delivery vans continues distribution into Thursday throughout the Delmarva Peninsula. The Guide is also available on the World Wide Web. 

Loyal advertisers (some of which have been advertising since 1959), account for The Guide’s staying power. Some advertisers have held on to their page positions for over 25 years on a weekly schedule. The Guides popularity has been proven over and over again in surveys, various tracking methods and simply people arriving to a business with a copy in hand. 

In this day and time, we are targeting new technology to promote and enhance the advertiser’s dollar. We continue to be Delmarva’s Leading Weekly Advertising Publication.

Live Oak Brewing Company is truly a home-grown Austin enterprise. Two of Austin’s own homebrewers, Chip McElroy and Brian Peters, literally hand-built the brewery and were the two main brewers, keg washers, delivery persons, and proselytizers. Live Oak has grown since then, but we are still just as passionate about providing delicious old-world style beers that are rarely commercially available. Our special beers are brewed in limited quantities in a small east Austin brewery and are available in fine pubs and restaurants in Alpine, Austin, Dallas, Fort Worth, Houston, Marathon, New Braunfels, Plano, San Antonio, San Marcos, Waco and Wimberley.

Live Oak employs an old-world style of brewing rarely found in America today but practiced extensively throughout Germany and the Czech Republic. A decoction mash, open fermentation, and secondary lagering are essential to duplicate the rich maltiness and unique flavors of central European beers. The results are yours to enjoy.

Pilz 

Crisp, clean, and refreshing, this pilsner is styled after the original Bohemian classic from the town of Pizen, Czech Republic. Pilz is a golden-colored brew that balances a pleasant hoppiness with its smooth malt flavor. It finishes dry with a moderate bitterness that is a hallmark of the style. Available Year-round 

Big Bark Amber Lager 

“Smooth” is the first word from your mouth after a taste of Big Bark Amber. This Vienna-style lager has a reddish-amber color with a smooth, malty flavor and low hop bitterness. It is made from Czech and German malts and German hops. “All Bark, No Bite.” Everyone likes this beer. Available Year-round 

HefeWeizen 

Modeled after the classic wheat beers of Bavaria, our HefeWeizen has a cloudy, straw-colored appearance with a thick, creamy head. It is fermented with an authentic Weizenbier yeast strain which imparts delicate notes of clove, vanilla and banana which harmonize perfectly with its mild refreshing tartness. Together these flavors create the perfect thirst quencher to beat the Texas heat. Available Year-round 

Oaktoberfest – Fall Seasonal 

A fall classic, our Oaktoberfest emphasizes rich malt flavor. We use German malt and hops to give it an authentic Bavarian character. The rich maltiness of this brew is a good match with spicy cuisine, as well as barbecue. Live Oak Oaktoberfest will certainly raise the level of enjoyment at your next fall gathering. Available September – December 

Primus – Winter Seasonal 

Our new winter seasonal, Primus (pronounced, “pre moose”), is a dark, rich German-style Weizen beer (beer made with wheat malt) fermented with a very particular strain of brewers’ yeast that gives this beer it’s unique spicy and fruity character. The unfiltered beer has the characteristic clove and banana flavors familiar to HefeWeizen drinkers but with a darker and richer roasty malt character that is typical of some German-style Bock beers. The alcohol strength will be around 8%. Available November – January 

Liberation Ale 

Liberation Ale is light in color and strong in hop character. Dry hopping with Cascade hops, gives this favorite a delicious citrus note reminiscent of a Texas Ruby Red. Its 60 IBUs will satisfy the most demanding of hop heads, while its full malt character balances the assertive hoppiness. This is one of the most well-balanced IPAs you can find. Available Year-round

History

Cascade Energy Inc. was formed in 1993 when Marcus Wilcox, Rob Morton, and Mike McDevitt left Braco Energy Services to start their own consulting business. These founding principals got a loan from US Bank, some desks from Tektronix, and some state-of-the-art computers (66 Mhx 486s) and hung up their shingle.
Our first contracts were for performing energy audits for local utilities PacifiCorp and Portland General Electric. Cascade was profitable that year and has been profitable every year since.

In 1998, we hired our first employee engineer—Dan Brown—after receiving a large research grant from Northwest Energy Efficiency Alliance, and we have experienced steady growth since then. In 2003, we performed our first national-scale Kaizen Blitz (as we call it now) for a leading grocery customer, and in 2005 we developed our first national multipronged energy-management program, for SYSCO Corporation.

Cascade’s most recent work includes the operation of energy management services for multiple national and regional clients. In addition, we have moved into the design, roll-out, and execution of innovative efficiency programs for Northwest utility companies (through Energy Trust of Oregon and others). In 2009, Bonneville Power Administration awarded Cascade’s team the contract to design and manage its entire Energy Smart Industrial program across four Western states.

The challenges of operating an industrial facility are many.
